Academic Title

Senior Professor of Liberal Arts (First Cohort), Tsinghua University

Personal Introduction
       Han Meilin, born in Jinan, Shandong, China in 1936, enrolled in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1955 (transferred to the newly established Central Academy of Crafts & Arts in 1956 as part of institutional restructuring). He is currently a Senior Professor of Liberal Arts at Tsinghua University, a member of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History, Honorary Director of the Ceramic Art Committee of the China Artists Association, Vice President of the World Chinese Association, and Honorary President of the China Arts and Crafts Association.

Han Meilin is a tireless practitioner and pioneer in the arts. His creative endeavors span a wide range, including painting, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics, design, and writing. His distinctive artistic style draws from the essence of Chinese cultural traditions and folk art, transforming them into works that embody contemporary aesthetic principles.

In 1980, he held a solo exhibition tour across 21 cities in the United States, receiving the "Golden Key" from San Diego and having October 1 designated as "Han Meilin Day" in Manhattan, New York. His animated film The Hunter and the Fox won the Best Art Award at the 4th Zagreb International Animation Festival in Yugoslavia. In 1983, six of his works were selected for United Nations Christmas cards. In 2003, he received the "World Art Contribution Award" from the World Artists Association (USA). In 2004, he was awarded the "World Art Grand Master Award" by the World Artists Association (USA) and the "Presidential Education Award" from former U.S. President George W. Bush. In 2011, he was named "China's Most Globally Recognized Figure" by Global Times and received the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Arts and Culture" from the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. He held the "Han Meilin Art Exhibition" at the National Museum of China, which was a resounding success.

In 2012, his sculpture series Mother and Child won the "Copyright Gold Award" from the World Intellectual Property Organization. On December 21, 2013, the first "Han Meilin Day" was established in China. In 2015, he became the first Chinese artist to be named a "UNESCO Artist for Peace." In 2016, the "Han Meilin World Global Tour" was launched, with exhibitions in Venice, Italy; Beijing, China; Paris, France; Vaduz, Liechtenstein; Seoul, South Korea; and Bangkok, Thailand. He was awarded the title of "Honorary Academician" by the University of Venice. In 2018, the International Olympic Committee awarded him the "Pierre de Coubertin Medal" for his outstanding contributions to the Olympic movement. In October of the same year, the South Korean government awarded him the "Order of Cultural Merit" for his contributions to Sino-Korean cultural exchanges. In 2019, he received the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Influential Chinese Figures" from Phoenix TV and over 20 other media outlets. Comprehensive Han Meilin Art Museums have been established in Hangzhou, Beijing, and Yinchuan. In 2019, the Han Meilin Zisha Art Museum opened in Yixing, marking the "3+1 model" (three comprehensive art museums + one thematic art museum) of Han Meilin Art Museums, actively promoting social aesthetic education and international cultural exchanges.

He also served as the chief design consultant for the new generation of uniforms for the Armed Police in 2007 and the design consultant for the new era military uniforms.

His works are collected by the Palace Museum, the National Museum of China, the National Art Museum of China, the State Russian Museum, the British Museum, the National Museum of Egypt, the Collège de France, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Washington, among others.
