2026 Global Faculty Recruitment | Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University
2026.07.16

I.About AADTHU

The Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University (AADTHU), traces its origin to the Central Academy of Arts & Design, which was founded in 1956. As the first higher education institution in China dedicated to arts and design, the Academy has remained committed to serving people’s everyday needs. It has played a pioneering role in the development of modern art and design education in China, establishing itself as a leading force in diversifying artistic innovation and becoming an integral part of the country’s century-long development of art and design.

In November 1999, the Central Academy of Arts & Design was merged into Tsinghua University and renamed the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, opening a new chapter in its development within a comprehensive university.

On April 19, 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Tsinghua University, with the Academy of Arts & Design as his first stop. Xi pointed out that fine arts, art, science, and technology complement and reinforce one another. We should give full play to the important role of fine arts in serving economic and social development, integrate more artistic and aesthetic elements into urban and rural planning to enhance their cultural and aesthetic appeal, and ensure that artistic achievements better meet people’s pursuit of a quality life. He also stressed the need to strengthen cultural confidence and promote international cultural exchange through art.

Teachers and students of the Academy have carefully studied and implemented the guiding principles of President Xi’s important speech, translating his earnest expectations into educational practices to support major national initiatives. With the integration of art and science being its core development philosophy and distinctive educational feature, the Academy has contributed to shaping China’s national image, participated in major national art projects, and remains committed to serving national cultural development, urban and rural economic growth, and people’s growing pursuit for a higher-quality life, achieving significant results in the process.

The Academy is now actively developing a world-class art and design talent cultivation system with Chinese characteristics, aiming to nurture “virtuous, artistic, knowledgeable and creative” talents with global competence. Through explorations in interdisciplinary education, the Academy has promoted cultural inheritance and innovation while advancing international exchange and collaboration.

The Academy comprises ten departments, covering textile and fashion design, ceramic design, visual communication design, environmental art design, industrial design, arts and crafts, information art and design, painting, sculpture, and art history. It offers more than 20 undergraduate specializations and grants doctoral degrees in three first-level disciplines, namely design, fine arts, and art theory. It also hosts a postdoctoral research station.

In the new era, the Academy will fully leverage Tsinghua University’s comprehensive disciplinary strengths to enhance the integration of art and science and foster extensive and in-depth interdisciplinary collaboration. It will chart a distinctly Chinese development path for artistic design, striving to become a shaper of the national image, a creator of a better life, an inheritor of outstanding cultural heritage, a leader in art and science integration, and a cultivator of innovative talents, as it strives unremittingly to become a world-class academy of arts and design.
