The International Council of Design (ico-D) held its 28th General Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, from November 30th to December 2nd, 2019. The General Assembly has selected its new Executive Board for 2019-2021, and Professor Chao Zhao from Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and Design was chosen as the Vice President of the Executive Board.

The Board consists of eight experts in design from Canada, the United States, South Africa, China, Malaysia, Italy and Jordan. The election of Professor Zhao strengthens the leading role of Chinese design discipline in international design organizations. It will encourage more cooperation between Chinese design industries and international associations. It is of great significance as this demonstrates the importance of Tsinghua University's positive influence on the world stage.
Each year, ico-D hosts a platform meeting in different regions of the world utilizing platforms for professional development, education and design promotion. After the latest General Assembly in Vancouver, ico-D hosted a Platform Meeting. Professor Zhao made a speech on the topic of Chinese design. Later in his election speech, he demonstrated his intention of ensuring that Chinese design education and design industry contribute further on the international stage by utilizing the platform of ico-D in the context of globalization. He also proposed to establish an educational laboratory and an Office of the International Council of Design in China to further promote globalized cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural design education, research and performance.
