Academic Claims
Professor Yuan is dedicated to theoretical and practical research on the innovation of traditional crafts and design.
She advocates tracing origins without clinging to outdated traditions, and seeking new ideas, innovative forms and contemporary themes by drawing on traditional model methods and compositional principles. She further incorporates the concept and practice of “tracing origins to inspire innovation” into design exploration, uses it as a teaching philosophy to guide students in connecting traditional crafts with contemporary life through research and design. Such a practical approach revitalizes traditional cultural resources in academic research and social innovation projects, conveying a vision for better life and proposing creative solutions for further integration of traditional cultural resources into modern life.
Academic Achievements
In recent years, Professor Yuan has been conducting field investigations, teaching research and creation practice in the fields of handcrafted papermaking and New Year Pictures, and has accumulated extensive experience in carrying forward workmanship, spreading knowledge and making innovative transformation of designs. By participating in product transformation, exhibitions and exchanges and academic forums, Professor Yuan has been promoting the creative reform and innovative development of traditional crafts from both cultural and academic perspectives.
In the field of handcrafted papermaking in China, she has been tapping the potential of handcrafted papermaking as both a material and a medium for design to intervene in daily life and re-create the craft culture. As the project leader, Professor Yuan completed the project titled “The Study on Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritors: Modern Transformation of Traditional Handcrafted Papermaking” under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2016. The paper on this project, titled “Modern Transformation of Traditional Handcrafted Papermaking: R&D of Paper Products”, was presented at the 32nd Annual Conference of the Folk Arts and Crafts Committee of China National Arts and Crafts Society, and awarded the first prize of the “Xiangtu Award”. Results of this project were exhibited in Beijing, Suzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Shenzhen under the theme of “Paper Origin, Transmitting the Temperature of Handcrafted Papermaking”, and were introduced to Montpellier, France, in 2017. In 2019, China Design Exhibition highlighted this “Paper Origin” project as a demonstrative case of revitalizing traditional handcrafted papermaking, and featured it in its traditional crafts revitalization section in Shenzhen. In 2020, Professor Yuan completed her works for the exhibition entitled “Skills and Artistry of Chinese Handcrafted Papermaking”. She also worked with e-commerce platforms to promote the innovative commercialization of project results, in a bid to foster the innovative development of traditional crafts represented by New Year Pictures. Results the Camp were exhibited at Beijing Design Week, and were presented at the forum titled “Innovation of Chinese New Year Woodcut Works: Approaches and Mechanisms”. In 2022, the project titled “Tracing Origins to Inspire Innovation: Design that Revitalizes New Year Pictures” was featured as a highlighted case at the 4th China Design Exhibition & Public Art Thematic Exhibition.
