Research Interests
1) He continues to explore and develop the innovative artistic expression of “ink engraving,” intending to establish a complete painting system, while also focusing on comparative studies of contemporary black-and-white art creation both in China and abroad.
2) He explores the cross-cultural and cross-material integration in mixed-media painting, encompassing research, development, and hands-on practice. His work includes large-scale, integrated three-dimensional paintings inspired by themes such as the Book of Songs (Shijing) and the 24 Solar Terms.
3) He continues to serve as the editor-in-chief of the art magazine Beauty, in collaboration with the Commercial Press. He also leads cultural publishing projects for other publishers.
Academic Views
The practice, exploration, and innovation of mixed media on canvas and black-and-white painting on paper should continue, aiming to develop an independent, complete, and innovative artistic language. Contemporary paintings rooted in Chinese ethnic traditions should be crafted with lines, black-and-white contrasts, spirit, and temperament that reflect the essence of Chinese culture. This includes using materials such as lacquer, ink, paper, fiber, silk, clay, and wood - core elements of Eastern cultural essence - through a mixed-media approach. It should reflect the natural evolution, cultivation, and deepening of the artist’s creative spirit in contemporary practice. It should also integrate the aesthetics of both Eastern and Western traditions with the unique creative spirit, poetic landscape, and simplicity of “engraving” in Chinese art, linking them to traditional forms such as Qin bamboo slips, Han paintings, and stone inscriptions. This will allow for the natural translation of traditional genes into contemporary expressions and facilitate cross-cultural dialogue in the teaching process. Through creative practice, students can refine their unique techniques, deepen their ideas, enhance their skills, broaden their artistic understanding, and cultivate their overall growth. Ultimately, this will empower students to develop mature, independent thinking.
