Academic Philosophy
Specializing in meticulous flower-and-bird painting, I integrate the Song-Yuan dynasties’ heavy-color traditions with innovations in composition, thematic expression, and material techniques. My pioneering use of raw and semi-processed silk substrates has established a distinct artistic language, recognized for its academic rigor and stylistic originality.
In teaching, I adhere to the pedagogical sequence of copying → sketching → creation. Copying deepens traditional understanding, sketching refines observational sensitivity, and creation cultivates poetic expression. My textbooks—Techniques of Meticulous Flower-and-Bird Painting, Line Drawing Florals: Copying Models, and Song Dynasty Album Leaf Copying Models—propose systematic methodologies that have influenced contemporary pedagogy and practice.
