Organized by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the competition's theme this year was “Metamorphosis.” Using needles as pens and threads as ink, participants explored the infinite possibilities of transformation through character styling as their medium. Entries from alliance institutions, including the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, the Central Academy of Drama, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Beijing Film Academy, the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Beijing Dance Academy, Communication University of China, Beijing City University, and Beijing University of Technology, competed fiercely in preliminary and semifinal rounds. Ultimately, 69 works advanced to the finals, with awards distributed across four categories: Fashion Design, Puppet Styling Design, Digital Character Styling Design, and Theatrical & Film Character Styling Design. Each category honored one First Prize, two Second Prizes, three Third Prizes, and multiple Excellence Awards.
Over its 16-year history, the Beijing Figure Design Award of College Students has witnessed generations of young designers rise to prominence, reflecting the evolution of character design education from specialized expertise to interdisciplinary innovation. The competition upholds a core philosophy of “promoting teaching, learning, creativity, and integration through competition,” successfully fostering a higher education model that revitalizes traditional culture, applies cutting-edge technology, and meets industrial demands. This year, a new Digital Character Styling category was introduced, incorporating metaverse concepts and AI-assisted design tools to deepen the fusion of digital modeling and artistic expression, paving the way for cultivating versatile talent in an era of virtual-physical symbiosis. The submitted works embody students’ contemporary interpretations of Chinese aesthetics and their profound reflections on technological transformation, demonstrating their courage to break conventions and blend diverse creative languages, a testament to the mission and vision of the new generation of designers.
