Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Gold and Silver Commemorative Coins Issued, Designed by Faculty and Students from Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University

to return to the embrace of nature.

Professor Wang Hongwei from the Department of Visual Communication Design at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, along with his doctoral student Miao Hui and graduate student Xiong Sui’an, actively participated in the design of the National Park series commemorative coins. Among them, the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park gold and silver commemorative coins were officially issued on April 15, 2025.

The Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park commemorative coins consist of two pieces: one gold coin and one silver coin. The obverse of both coins features the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, along with the country name and the year of issue, making them legal tender of the People’s Republic of China.

In 2023, the People’s Bank of China launched the National Park series commemorative coins. Prior to this, commemorative coins for Sanjiangyuan National Park, Giant Panda National Park, and Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park had already been issued. Among them, the 30g silver coins for Giant Panda National Park and Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park were jointly designed by Professor Wang Hongwei and his students Miao Hui and Xiong Sui’an.

The reverse design of the 3g round gold coin features the natural landscape of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, with the Wuzhi Mountain, known as the "Roof of Hainan," as the centerpiece. The five peaks rise and fall, connected like a hand. The foreground showcases the Alsophila plant and the unique phenomenon of a single tree forming a forest in the tropical rainforest, while the background depicts the Yinggeling and Jianfengling mountains. The design is accompanied by the inscription "Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park" and the coin’s face value.

The coin employs various techniques such as color-shifting scales, sandblasting, multi-level sandblasting, and mirror finishing to depict the layered ridges of the majestic mountains and the intertwined roots of the lush forest, capturing the unique and magnificent scenery of the tropical rainforest. The coin has a diameter of 18 mm, a face value of 50 yuan, and a maximum mintage of 10,000 pieces.

The reverse design of the 30g round silver coin features the black and yellow Hainan gibbon as the main element, complemented by decorative elements of Hopea and Alsophila plants, set against the natural landscape of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. The relationship and contrast between the flora and fauna and the landscape highlight the sense of space and biodiversity. The design is accompanied by the inscription "Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park" and the coin’s face value.

The coin utilizes techniques such as color-shifting scales, color painting, sandblasting, multi-level sandblasting, and mirror finishing to vividly depict the vibrant energy between the mountains and the sea. The lively and adorable wildlife, the thriving protected plants, and the colorful clouds echo one another, creating a scene of ethereal beauty and a thriving natural ecosystem. The coin has a diameter of 40 mm, a face value of 10 yuan, and a maximum mintage of 30,000 pieces.

condenses the unique charm and grandeur of nature into a tiny space,
allowing people to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle
and immerse themselves in the beauty of mountains and waters.
