The 2021 Online Graduation Exhibition of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design

At 2 pm on June 8, 2021, the Opening Ceremony of the 2021 Undergraduate Exhibition and the Launch Ceremony of the Online Graduation Exhibition of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University were held in the hall of Tsinghua University Art Museum. Attending the event were over 300 people including Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design; Ma Sai, Party Secretary of the Academy; Wu Qiong, Deputy Secretary of the Academy; Yang Dongjiang and Fang Xiaofeng, Assistant Deans of the Academy; He Li, Deputy Secretary of the Academy; Su Dan, Deputy Director of Tsinghua University Art Museum; Fang Yongxin, Partner of Alibaba Group and Head of Alibaba Cloud Education; and Li Bei, Director of Academic Cooperation of Alibaba Group. The ceremonies were presided by Yang Dongjiang, Vice President of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design, presided.



The theme of this year’s graduation exhibition is “Ask: Our Diverse World”. This was the first time that the Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design started offline and online exhibitions simultaneously.


At the opening ceremony, Kang Yunshu, an undergraduate in the Department of Ceramic Art and Design, and Chen Hui, a professor in the Department of Painting, spoke on behalf of participating students and instructors respectively.



Kang Yunshu noted that Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design provides an excellent platform for sharing and inspiring ideas. The discipline vision at the international frontier and comprehensive discipline quality have laid a solid foundation for students’ artistic exploration. The outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, while altering people’s living conditions, has also given rise to the change of display media. Online and offline exhibitions not only provide new perspectives and ways to examine works, but also indicate that art and technology will be more closely and diversely combined. As art designers in the new era, we will not forget our original aspiration, bear in mind the spirit of the Academy of Arts & Design, achieve excellence through self-improvement and shape the future through innovation!



Chen Hui, a professor in the Department of Painting, delivered a warm speech on behalf of instructors. Prof. Chen Hui concluded by saying that with a good university education students should be trained into fighting patriots, responsible leaders, stargazers, dream catchers, explorers seeking knowledge, elegant people with a healthy style. He encouraged students to be self-reliant, self-improving and self-confident, and to outshine their teachers. He also hoped that they should have teamwork spirit, and forge ahead, undaunted by challenges. Mr. Chen concluded his speech by saying that “the light of art will always shine for you”, urging the graduates to “live their life without regret, and diligently work for the present while gazing at stars”.



Prof. Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design, delivered a speech on behalf of the Academy. Prof. Lu concluded that this was the first time that the Academy of Arts & Design presented offline and online exhibitions in a combined form, as a never-ending report on graduation design achievements transcending time and space. Prof. Lu noted that this year marked the 110th anniversary of the founding of Tsinghua University. In President Xi Jinping’s visit of Tsinghua University, he arrived at the Academy of Arts & Design as the first stop, which greatly encouraged the art and design circles. Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design should adhere to the goal of training world-class talents for the country, follow Tsinghua University’s “Trinity” talent training concept and the integration of art and science as its characteristics, strive to promote teaching reform, build a more open, inclusive and multi-level art design talent training system, and improve the quality of talent training, research and social service. Based on the times, the works of the exhibitions explore new forms of artistic expression and innovative design and application methods with new concepts and technologies, presenting students’ observation and exploration of life, future and the world with distinctive personality and characteristics. Meanwhile, the exhibitions showcase every student’s outstanding comprehensive qualifications, critical thinking skills and solid artistic foundation, as well as their courage to explore, persevere in their ideals, be realistic pragmatic, and boldly innovative. Prof. Lu Xiaobo hoped that the students will live to the fullest and be worthy of the great times.


At the opening ceremony, the launching ceremony of the 2021 Online Graduation Exhibition of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design was also held. Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design, Ma Sai, Party Secretary of the Academy, Yang Dongjiang, Assistant Dean, Vice President, Fang Yongxin, Partner of Alibaba Group and Head of Alibaba Cloud Education, and representatives of teachers and students of the Academy of Arts & Design came to the stage to announce the official launch of this online graduation exhibition.



The 2021 Undergraduate Graduation Exhibition of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design was jointly exhibited in Tsinghua University Art Museum and Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design. A total of 284 undergraduate graduates participated in this exhibition, presenting more than 1,000 works. The exhibition will last until June 24th. On the same day, the 2021 Online Graduation Exhibition of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design was launched simultaneously. 484 bachelor and masters' graduates in 11 departments present more than 2,000 excellent graduation works. Through the 2.5D cloud virtual scroll, the innovative ideas and teaching achievements of teachers and students of the Academy of Arts & Design are publicly displayed.



With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic , the world order is being rewritten. The graduates of the Tsinghua the Academy of Arts & Design expressed their thoughts on the themes of time and space, nature and life in their works, maintaining their concerns with social reality while indicating their expectations for future life. Young people are not only sensitive to problems, but also have the courage and ability to solve them. They are a new generation of “the Academy of Arts & Design” people who uphold the lofty ideal of “art serving the society”.


This graduation exhibition is presented online and offline simultaneously. People can visit the site to see the exhibition, or log in to the cloud end to browse the works, fully experience the flexible exhibitions in both physical and virtual spaces, compare the subtle changes of the same work in different spaces, and enjoy a double visual feast combining virtuality and reality.
