On July 28, 2017, the Central Military Commission held a grand ceremony to award the Order of Bayi and grant honorary titles in Beijing. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the People’s Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, awarded medals and certificates to winners of the Order of Bayi such as Mai Xiande, and granted honorary flags to units of honorary titles.

The newly established Order of Bayi is the highest military honor decided by the Central Military Commission and issued with a certificate by Chairman of the Central Military Commission. The Order of Bayi, the Order of Republic, the Order of Qiyi and the Order of Friendship are the highest awards and recognition by the Party and the State. On the eve of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the Central Military Commission awarded the Order of Bayi for the first time, which fully demonstrated the high respect and praise for heroes and exemplars. Its designer is Xia Xin, alumnus of the 1990 Class of the Department of Visual Communication (the former Department of Decoration) of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University, and director of the Arts Design Office of the Exhibition Design Department of the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution.

The design focuses on giving high praise the military personnel who have done meritorious service in upholding national sovereignty, security and development interests and in promoting the modernization of national defense and the armed forces. It aims to motivate and guide officers, soldiers, cadres and the masses to emulate those exemplars, respect heroes, and strive to become pioneers, and to bring together the great willpower to realize China’s dream of building a strong army. It integrates wisdom from all sides and steps up research and argumentation based on the idea to build a strong army and demonstrate Chinese culture and with consideration of international practices and supporting frameworks. It demonstrates the endeavor to combine profound thoughts, elegant style, and precious, elaborate texture, and to consolidate political features, nobility, and elements of culture, arts, time, and uniqueness into one high-quality design.
