This exhibition is the outcome of graduate courses from different departments of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University. The purpose of the course is to explore the work methods and models with universal referential importance for our country’s construction of urban cultural districts. The instructor of this course is Huang Yan, associate professor of the Department of Environmental Art Design of the Tsinghua Academy of Arts & Design as well as visiting scholar of Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD).
During the four-week study, students carried out field studies, interviews and detailed measurements, and read relevant government documents and policies etc. Different from those of traditional design courses, the outcome of this course covered the study in all aspects of urban culture and cultural district construction including government policies, investment and operation management, business models, and industrial content allocation, made forward-looking planning and sorted out and planned the town space on this basis, and put forward conceptions of industrial activity planning, overall image of the town, and space design in line with the local conditions.
Meanwhile, this course is also a systematic “top-level design” study of the designers, so these exhibited works have a more “systematic” expression method and artistic language. From project specification to urban space design, from urban project operations to commercial economic planning, these are all that designers should consider. Apart from the aesthetic or formal content, designers also have multiple responsibilities such as government consultants, creative planners, and economic and industrial analysts from the very beginning of the projects. They are concerned about local industrial upgrading, creation of employment, improvement of resource allocations and rejuvenation of the local area, so that under the guidance of ecological civilization, the design results can achieve the goal of sound sustainable development of both economy and culture.
