2020.11.15

On the afternoon of October 25, 2017, the “Beginners’ Handcrafts” works exhibition of the 2015 Class of Metalworking Course of the Department of Art and Crafts was held. The exhibition was planned and arranged by nine undergraduates, featuring the works they designed and produced in the Metalworking Course under the guidance of teachers such as Wang Xiaoxin, associate professor of the Department of Arts and Crafts, Maeda Hirotomo, associate professor of the Tokyo University of Arts in Japan, and Wang Huazao, inheritor of the traditional silver and bronze wares in Heqing, Yunnan Province. The exhibition involved different art forms such as relief, wares and color painting, and included craft techniques such as forging, hammering, cut image inlaying, line inlaying, pattern weaving with gold thread and patinating, to demonstrate rich themes, diverse styles and distinctive characteristics.

Since its establishment, the Metal Art Major of the Department of Art and Crafts of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University has adhered to the educational philosophy of “focusing on both theory and practice, and paying attention to both tradition and practice”. It emphasizes the importance of starting from craft practices and cultivates students’ abilities to combine mind and hand, observe life, and to create and design.
