The Department of Environmental Art Design was the former Department of Interior Decoration established in 1957 in Central Academy of Arts & Design. It was renamed as Department of Architecture Decoration, then Department of Industrial Art, later Department of Interior Design, and finally its present name in 1988. The Department is the earliest institution in mainland China to teach Interior Design and Landscape Design.
Interior Design is the integrated design of decoration and display inside an architecture or structure, related to several disciplines such as architecture, civil engineering, plastic arts, product design, light and power, etc.. With "Interior Design" courses at its core, the teaching system has five stages: major fundamentals , specialized design, specialized theories, social practice and graduation design. The main courses include: Conceptual Space Design, Design Presentation, Human Engineering, Material Structure and Crafts, Architecture Design Foundations, Display Art Design, Furniture Design, Environment Lighting Design, Environment Color Design, Environment Landscaping Design, Environmental Art Design Introduction, History of Chinese and Foreign Architecture and Garden, etc. The major aims to cultivate students with solid specialized knowledge, good comprehensive environmental awareness, aesthetic capabilities, systematic design methods and skills, creative thinking and presentation abilities. By practical design practices combining traditional and modern styles, students can master basic methods for interior space modeling design, interface decoration design and display art design, building a complete concept of space and scale, and acquiring relevant skills to use materials and techniques properly.
Landscape Design integrates the design of the urban space visual image and the architecture landscape system, which is related to other disciplines such as urban planning, architecture design, garden landscaping and design, plastic arts, public facilities, etc. With "Landscape Design" courses at its core, the teaching system also has five stages: major fundamentals, specialized design, specialized theories, social practice and graduation design. The main courses include: Space Design Concept, Design Presentation, Landscape Survey, Architecture Form Studies, Gardening Fundamentals, Public Facility Design, Public Art Design, Gardening Design, Urban Design, Urban Planning Principles, History of Chinese and Foreign Architecture and Garden, Environmental Behavior Psychology. The major aims to make students comprehend the historical development of the Chinese and foreign urban planning, architecture and garden design, training their aesthetic capabilities, systematic design methods and skills, and innovative thinking. Through diversified real-life design practices, students can master fundamental skills for general layout design, space modeling and landscape constituents, and obtain overall judgment, analysis, implementation and management of environmental landscape.
