Title

Tenured Professor, Director of the Future Laboratory of Tsinghua University, and Doctoral Supervisor

Academic Titles

Director, the Future Laboratory of Tsinghua University

Director, Tsinghua University-Alibaba Joint Lab on Natural Human-Computer Interaction Research

Director, Lab for Lifelong Learning, Tsinghua University

Dr. Xu Yingqing is a tenured professor at Tsinghua University, working at the Academy of Arts & Design and the Future Laboratory of Tsinghua University. Currently, he serves as a professor at the Department of Information Art and Design of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University and director of the Future Laboratory of Tsinghua University. He previously served as the director of the Department of Information Art and Design of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University (2012-2019). Before joining Tsinghua University, he was a Lead Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia and concurrently served as the Co-Director of the Microsoft - Beijing Film Academy Digital Cartoon and Animation Joint Laboratory.

He conducts teaching and research in the fields of user natural experience design, immersive perception and interaction design, tactile cognition and interaction design, and digitalization of cultural heritage. He has received numerous accolades, including Tsinghua University’s Outstanding Worker Award and the Advanced Individual in Teaching and Mentoring Award. In addition, he has been recognized multiple times as an Excellent Master’s and Doctoral Dissertation Advisor by both Tsinghua University and the Academy of Arts & Design. He has published nearly 100 academic papers at international conferences and on academic journals, applied for dozens of domestic and international patents, many of which have been applied to real-world products.

He has been responsible for or participated in multiple scientific research projects related to cultural and creative design, including the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), the National Key Research and Development Program of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has also participated in multiple research and design works in the field of cultural and creative industries, such as the lighting display design for G20 in Hangzhou, the design of the Digital Forbidden City Exhibition Hall, the immersive multimedia audio-visual display system design of Exploring Along the River During the Qingming Festival of the Forbidden City, and the digitalization of Dunhuang cultural heritage. He has made active efforts to explore design innovation theories and methods based on interdisciplinary intersections. For example, according to the data from the World Health Organization in 2020, the number of visually impaired people globally was 253 million, and there were 17.63 million visually impaired people in China (China Disabled Persons’ Federation, 2019). Visually impaired people not only need to learn Braille but also disciplines like mathematics, geometry, chemistry, and physics at school. His team persisted for over 10 years and developed a special computer for the visually impaired people, with a large-format tactile graphic terminal featuring dot matrices that can protrude and retract. Visually impaired people read text and recognize graphics by touching the Braille or tactile graphics composed of these protruding dot matrices. This device can be widely used in scenarios such as blind schools, libraries, and museums.

This achievement was selected into the 2019 DESIGN POWER 100 and won the Annual Health Design Award. Additionally, he led the team to build an olfactory detection and interaction application platform, a computing platform for understanding daily emotions and behaviors of human beings, a human emotion communication database, intelligent hardware for lifelong learning, and a fruit and vegetable flavor database for smart agriculture. Since March 2019, he has served as the head of the research team for the conceptual creative design plan of the 2022 Winter Olympics; this team proposed a series of innovative design application suggestions for the Winter Olympics based on science and technology, and many of these suggestions were adopted and implemented by relevant departments.

He has served in multiple international academic conferences, holding positions such as co-chair/program committee chair or member of the conference, and has been invited to deliver keynote reports and speeches on multiple occasions. He is a fellow of the China Computer Federation, a member of the Chinese Artists Association, and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Educational Background

He obtained a Doctor of Engineering degree from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences;

He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Mathematics, Jilin University.

Xu Yingqing was born in Beijing and studied at Beijing Guanghua Road No.1 Primary School and Beijing Ritan Middle School. During his middle school years, he was a member of the aviation model group and the ship model group of the science and technology group at the Beijing Children’s Palace and still likes model design and construction to this day.
