Academic Claims
I focus on the research of traditional dyeing and weaving crafts and textile design and conduct systematic and in-depth research on the history, development, inheritance, and application of traditional dyeing and weaving crafts. During the research, I put forward the viewpoint that “traditional crafts should be integrated into daily life, and design applications should drive the inheritance of crafts”, promoting the combination of traditional dyeing and weaving crafts with contemporary life through design practices. In addition, I integrate such a concept into the teaching process. I have mentored students to complete course design works that have achieved outstanding results in professional competitions on multiple occasions. I incorporate my research direction into my work and promote the inheritance and innovation of traditional dyeing and weaving crafts through design practices. I use traditional dyeing and weaving crafts as the medium to create works, many of which have been featured in numerous national and international art exhibitions. The Charm of Mountains and Rivers (a total of 5 pieces), a serial work of mine, is now a permanent collection of China National Silk Museum. In the past 10 years, I have published a total of 21 papers and 13 works, and my fiber art works have been featured in 27 important exhibitions at home and abroad. I participated in one youth education project under the 12th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development, won one youth creation project of China National Arts Fund in 2017, undertook one independent research project at Tsinghua University, led one teaching reform project at Tsinghua University, participated in one key project of Tsinghua University Laboratory Innovation Fund, and participated in one teaching reform project at Tsinghua University. In terms of teaching, I have organically combined traditional crafts with modern design and introduced advanced equipment into the laboratory. By constantly experimenting in my teaching, I aim to improve the curriculum structure of the discipline of dyeing and weaving. When it comes to social work, I’ve been active in judging professional competitions on and off campus. I also serve as a member of the Patchwork Art and Design Education Professional Committee of China Textile and Apparel Education Society, a member of the Patchwork Art and Design Education Professional Committee of China Textile and Apparel Education Society, and a Think Tank Expert of the Guizhou Jinxiu Plan.

Teaching
Professor Zhang arranged the specific content of courses according to the development and curriculum needs of the discipline and actively constructed the curriculum structure. In recent years, she has researched and introduced the equipment required for courses, including semi-automatic sample loom, computerized embroidery machine, and hand quilting machine, mainly for Embroidery Design, Quilting, Weaving, Graduation Project, SRT and other courses. This improved the teaching system of the discipline and enriched the contents of the practical courses. Her current major teaching responsibilities include Embroidery Craft Foundation, Embroidery Design, Weaving, Visual Language I, Graduation Project, and Social Practice.
In teaching, she often thinks about how to guide students to combine traditional dyeing and weaving crafts with modern design. Through several years of teaching practice, she has formed the following teaching characteristics. The first is the research-based curriculum training model. The second is breaking through traditional material limitations. The third is to bring folk artists into the classroom, and the fourth is to use design applications to drive craft inheritance. Combined with years of teaching experience, she has published five teaching-related papers and a book titled Bead Embroidery Design, based on her scientific research and teaching. The book was published by Tsinghua University Press.
In recent years of teaching, she has mentored students to actively explore and boldly experiment with traditional crafts and modern design. Under her guidance, they took their works to various exhibitions and competitions and achieved excellent results. For example, in 2016 and 2017, they won multiple awards in the China International Fabric Creation, such as the Gold Award, the Special Award, and the Excellence Award. A total of one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals were awarded to them in the 2017 and 2018 China International Handicraft Art Competition. Besides, she directed undergraduate students to obtain Excellent Graduation Projects in 2017 and 2020 for their graduation projects. The coursework created by her students has been collected by the Academy of Arts & Design multiple times.
