Research Focus
Comparative Studies of Chinese and Western Apparel Cultures
Academic Philosophy
Both China and Western nations possess profound civilizations and sartorial traditions that serve as vital spiritual and material resources for human progress. Neither cultural self-deprecation nor chauvinism is constructive. Adopting a historical materialist lens, we must objectively analyze cultural differences, humbly learn from global traditions while championing our own heritage, thereby contributing to the rejuvenation of Chinese civilization.
Chinese culture, distinguished by Confucianism yet harmonizing Daoist and Buddhist philosophies, has shaped East Asian and global civilizations for millennia. Meanwhile, the Christian-centric West, particularly post-Renaissance Europe, synthesized ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman legacies through industrialization, driving monumental advancements in ideology, governance, and technology.
Comparative studies of these two cultural spheres’ apparel traditions—examining their evolutionary patterns and sociohistorical drivers—hold critical academic and practical value in today’s globalized world. Such research illuminates the character and worth of indigenous cultures, fortifies national confidence, and guides the conscious preservation and innovation of local heritage.
