Draping 2: “Limits and Breakthroughs”
2020.11.18

"Draping 2" is a basic course of fashion modeling design. In offline teaching, the course usually focuses on teacher demonstration to train students' modeling ability and practical skills. Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the course has changed to online teaching, posing challenges to the hands-on practices of teachers and students.

Instructor: Li Wei

Target students: third-year undergraduate students majoring in attire and fashion design

Time: 8:00-11:30, Monday, Wednesday and Friday

In light of the limitations of online teaching, Prof. Li Wei combines teaching with students' reporting.

First, she teaches knowledge points, from morphological cognition and enlightenment to appreciation of the 2D, 3D, 4D and unconventional modeling of costumes, so that students could have a systematic understanding of draping tailoring. At this stage, on the one hand, the contents of fiber art interpretation and costume modeling appreciation are added; on the other hand, emphasis is placed on copying, "nothing is better than drawing to preserve modeling." Students are encouraged to improve their aesthetic accomplishment and cognition of costume modeling by copying classic works.

Second, by appreciating the works of fashion masters, students can learn the design style of the masters and understand the spirit of brand culture.

Finally, from the selection of inspiration directions to the production of conceptual versions, and then to the understanding of fabrics, the artistic creation process is taught, so that students can understand the complete process of design expression.

"While we are coping with the severe challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, students are concerned with the current social problems and express their fashion attitude through design during the four-week online learning. Over this period, the students have been overcoming many difficulties. I hope in future study everyone will continue to keep their passion and thirst for knowledge, keep examining themselves and thinking critically, making more valuable and innovative designs and creations to repay the society." said Li Wei.
