Material Language in Public Art

Teaching Philosophy:

Material language reflects, from one perspective, the degree of civilization and character of different times. Colored Pottery Age, Stone Age, Bronze Age, to the present Information Age; all these times project their major social and physical forms through materials. Public Art relates closely to real life. Its birth and development after China’s reform and opening up both indicate the progress of the society. Public art has already expanded from the painting works on the walls in public buildings to various virtual and solid spaces in public places. The creation of public art is no longer limited to themed paintings limited to certain space and genre. People pay more and more attention to the information passed from materials and enjoy the beauty of each material, i.e. their natural property and spiritual implication. Material language has already shifted from a subordinate and base role in public art creation to a proactive one, a part of creativity. The creator finds the intrinsic and inevitable connection in themed creation from the properties of materials.

On the basis of this idea and over 20 years of art teaching, creation and practice, I advocate that man is the subject with active creativity in practical creation. People should stop staying on the surface in understanding the matter but expecting the mastery of its spiritual implication. Materials are bestowed with many personified ideals and pursuits and spiritual projections. “To acquire knowledge from analyzing the physical objects”, art creation needs to command the relationship between the subject and the object. Research should be made on the influence of various factors such as territory, culture and religion on materials. The genuineness of various art languages should be discussed and pursued and the particularity of material language be respected. Thus the material texture language can be reasonably utilized and comprehensively developed in modern public art and painting creation.
