The innovation in design driven by social and humanistic concerns is the future trend. To innovate interactive design and service design, the integrated theory and methodology of the interdisciplinary subjects should be adopted.
Interactive design, service design, and digital entertainment design
1. Research on social media-based service design innovations
Starting from the perspective of combining design and social and humanistic factors, Fu’s research on the innovations in social media-based service design focuses on the patterns and characteristics of the interpersonal interactions in the environment of digital media and networks, and he tries to apply the concepts and methods of social design, interactive design,service design, digital entertainment design and social innovation to the design projects in the interdisciplinary fields. By employing the concept of “research through design” as well as such new advanced technical platforms as intelligent interaction and mobile internet, his practice of innovation aims to explore the products and applications design for the areas of digital learning, medical information service and digital entertainment.
2. Research on interdisciplinary design education
The research on interdisciplinary design education focuses on knowledge system and teaching model of information art design. The knowledge system centered on “information, media and communication” has been constructed, and the discipline’s basic theory framework based on digital media and narrative, information structure and interaction, social networks and experience has been developed. The teaching concept for interdisciplinary design based on the “design thinking” has been established. The model and method of the interdisciplinary education in the areas of arts, technology and media has been explored. And the teaching and project practicing are conducted around the specific applications of digital entertainment design, social interactive design, and service design.
His major academic achievements are in the areas of teaching of interdisciplinary subjects, academic research, and creative design. In terms of teaching, he is in charge of the construction of the teaching system for the information design major at the Academy of Art & Design of Tsinghua University. He has developed the curriculum system for the second-degree program of digital entertainment design to which the interdisciplinary teaching approach applies. He also participates in the planning and execution of the interdisciplinary master’s program for information art and design of Tsinghua University.
In terms of academic research, he has fulfilled several key social sciences and humanities research projects focusing on the teaching and practical research in the interdisciplinary fields, such as The Construction of the Curriculum System for Digital Entertainment Design and Cultivation of Interdisciplinary Talents in the Comprehensive Universities commissioned by the Ministry of Education and the Research on Interactive Design Catering to Intangible Cultural Heritage commissioned by Tsinghua University. The innovative research achievements in the areas of digital entertainment design and interactive design have been made, which are among the frontiers of the relevant areas in China.
In terms of creative design, in 2007-2008, He took the lead in fulfilling, along with his associates, the planning and design of the Beijing 2008 Digital Olympic Museum, a large-sized interactive museum, a representative product of the Humanistic Olympic Games, as well as a precious cultural heritage of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Currently, He teaches the undergraduate courses of Interactive Design (1, 2) and Design Sociology; the graduate courses of Interactive Design and Research Topics on Service Design; and the second degree program’s course of Digital Entertainment Design. He once taught the undergraduate courses of Information Diagram Design, Methods of Information Design and Information Design. The course Interactive Design (1, 2), focusing on interaction and communication between human beings and products, as well as between society and environment, emphasizes contextual design and design centered on user behavior and experience. With the project-oriented teaching model, the course aims to cultivate students’ capabilities to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge and practices. The course Design Sociology focuses on the relationships between the information society, media and design and aims to cultivate students’ social and humanistic quality through case study and discussions. With internationalized teaching content and method, the graduate course Interactive Design is dedicated to the academic explorations of the concept, theory and trends of the interactive design. The course Research Topics on Service Design focuses on exploring the integrated method of service design in the information age and pays much attention to the practical research about design concepts and social innovations. The second-degree program’s course of Digital Entertainment Design focuses on the design of social games and on cultivating the design thinking capabilities of the students with multidisciplinary background.
