In time of vision oriented cultural phenomenon, pluralism is observed in the development of animation art. When animation crosses, merges, clashes and collides with other artistic forms, audio-visual artistic forms are created in a way characteristic of the times and carry a much more abundant humane connotation in the technology oriented social development.
1. Cross Innovation of Animation Art
Based on the ever-developing technologies of digital entertainment art creation and communication, cross innovation of animation art analyzes the interaction between animation and other art events, studies the public and artistic quality of animation-centered comprehensive artistic forms, and explores artistic creation methods in the cross-disciplinary areas.
2. Digital Animation Design
With emphasis on the research of technologies, methods and procedures adopted in advanced digital animation creation, digital animation design upgrades and improves the knowledge system of animation teaching. The research on digital animation design education aims to improve the students’ ability to apply new ideas or concepts in creation and practice. Besides, the research covers various aspects of animation education including design, practice, analysis, sum-up and streamlining to explore an advanced teaching method of animation design that meets the social need for creativity.
Dr. Wang’s academic achievements are mainly in research and creation of cross-boundary animation art. Since 2009, he has produced multi-media designs for several stage plays including Mysterious Qinghai, Quixote, etc. The multi-media images in Mysterious Qinghai present the mystical color, tremendous vigor and strong sentiment of the ancient times in an expressionistic way. A dazzling and beautiful dream world is created by those images and other stage art forms. The multi-media design of stages in Quixote is a bold artistic creation, in which the images cross the boundary of realism and avant-garde as the story develops. At the end of the play, a dynamic “paradoxical space” is presented with ethereal music, reviewing the fantastic yet idealistic life of Quixote in a modernistic way and casting the epic heroism of about 400 years ago into the innermost being of every audience. Between 2008 and 2010, Dr. Wang directed and completed two digital animation films which were the animation design of Yuanrong Time Square LED and 4D movie in the Petroleum Pavilion of World Expo 2010 respectively, exploring the animation creation and public art profoundly and combining the research of projects with education. Analyzing and summarizing the work in the above-mentioned projects, Dr. Wang has a deep-going study and exploration of teaching methods for animation. He has published several papers in the field including Report on Graduation Projects of Animation Majors in which he offers a lot of constructive advices for building and improving specialized curriculum for animation majors.
Dr. Wang teaches four courses： Digital Dynamic Design, Animated Creation of Games, Animation Creation II, and Animation Creation Practice.
1.Digital Dynamic Design： students will be able to acquire skills and methods to apply digital animation technologies in design, understand the basic principles and development trends of digital animation technology, and be able to use relevant software and hardware. With a focus on cultivation and practice of actual abilities, the course mainly includes such contents as the major technologies and tools in 3D digital animation and the use of high-end animation-makers like 3D Mega Capturor, etc.
2.Animated Creation of Games: students will get to know the use of animation technologies and their development trends and be able to design games with animation technologies. With a stress on cultivation of actual abilities, the course will explain in detail how to use common 3D animation software, and create basic animation of characters combining different equipment of 3D scanning and movement capturor.
3.Animation Creation II: students will understand the whole procedure of creation from script writing, breakdown to animation. The students will be guided to form a mode of overall thinking and comprehensive arrangement during the process of creation, have the basic qualities to be an animation director and understand the relationship between each procedure as well.
4.Animation Creation Practice: students of non-animation majors will get to know the development and status quo of animation both home and abroad, grasp the basic laws of animation creation, and listen to explanations of classical Chinese and foreign cartoons. Besides, the students will be guided in their study of contents and the form in which creations are expressed, and completion of art direction and breakdown script.
