Design of sustainable transportation tools

With the energy crisis, environment pollution, and acceleration of urbanization, the research and design of sustainable transportation tools aim at facing opportunities and challenges of traffic system and transportation tools in the new situation.

The design and research of sustainable transportation tools are not solely concerned with the transportation tools themselves, but with analysis of the traffic demands as a whole. Discussions over traffic system and transportation tools can be conducted from the perspective of use efficiency and sustainable development and from the division of demand of human mobility. By balancing the relation between mobility and the environment and establishing correct design concepts for transportation tools, we can concretely improve the design of specific transportation tools and the efficiency of the traffic system, and provide a clear direction and design basis for the design of transportation tools.

Relationship between modeling basis and design

The research of modeling basis and design provides the starting points and basis for the industrial design discipline as a whole, and is the link that bonds the basis of form, of structure, and of procedure. At the same time, it acts as the “key” to opening design thought and methodology.

Generally speaking, modeling basis studies the existing reasons of form, logical relationships of forms, and the feelings of forms to human. Modeling basis and the design research start by seeing how the construction and function of a material confirm with its structure and form, and how they display the material’s innate characteristics, as well as understanding various other levels of materials such as shaping and processing. The result of this research manifests itself in discovering which new ideas conform best with processing and construction. Both of these technologies are key factors affecting the form of products. The modeling must also comply with the principle of fully exerting performance from the materials, and the result of modeling in turn will affect the design details. This is essentially the “reason” why these products exist: the organic connection between pattern, form, and function.

The relationship of modeling basis and design further determines the basic thought process of industrial design: problem detection—understanding and analysis—standardizing and solving the said problem—creation. In this regard, styling basis is also designing methodology.

Integrated modeling basis is not only the basis of design, but also without doubt the core of design training and the foundation of which industrial design basis itself is built upon. Although modeling is not the sole driving force of design, the end result must manifest itself through modeling, therefore, modeling is still what design should pay attention to.
