Academic Proposition:

Environmental behavioral psychology is a cross-disciplinary science involving psychology, sociology, anthropology, architecture, environmental design and other disciplines, and is the combination of environmental psychology and environmental behavior. It studies the relations between human beings and the surrounding materials and spiritual conditions, as well as the interactions between human beings and the environment in which they live. Studies in this discipline will enable us to grasp the fundamental laws of human psychology and behavior, to understand the influences of human behaviors on the material environment, and to translate psychological needs of human beings into environmental design. The purpose of this discipline is also to consider the following factors when designing, for example, "people-oriented environment", "cultural change and environment", "environmental awareness", "environment and behavior", "environmental planning", "visual psychology and other perceptual psychologies", "intuition and cognition of environment among special groups", and "standards for environmental assessment".

Lighting design is also a cross-disciplinary category, involving urban planning, architecture design, product design, visual arts, art design, behavioral psychology, electrical engineering, light source and other related areas. Lighting environment refers to the physical and psychological environment created by lights and colors, and is a kind of material carrier. Its research includes artificial light environments (including light source, lighting device design, artificial lighting environment planning, interior lighting design, landscape lighting design, architectural lighting design, green light theory, etc.), natural light environments (including light climate research, lighting system design, environmental design of natural light, etc.), color and environment (including: the science of color, perception of color, color planning and design, etc.), and visual environment (including: the basic theoretical research on light and the visual sense, lighting quality evaluation, visual environmental assessment, etc.).

Academic Achievements:

1. Theoretical researches

I was in charge of compiling Lighting Design, Interior Design Encyclopedia edited by Professor Zhang Yiman, “Chapter 5: Ways to Deal with Environment & Art Design” of the textbook Environment & Art Design edited by Professor Zheng Shuyang, and a textbook named Lighting Design System for environmental design students.

My academic papers include:

Designs Need to be Integrated: Exploring the Construction of Basic Theory of Environmental Design and the Cultivation of Comprehensive Capability of Students, Environment & Art Design;

Environment, Art and Design: Fundamentals of Environment & Art Design System, Volume 152, November Issue of Decoration in 2005;

People-oriented: Interior Design Principles and Methods for Medical Architectures, published in Workshop on the 2nd National Environment & Art Design Exhibition: Design for China, and later collected into AIDIA JOURNAL Volume 7;

Light Environment Design for Museum, October Issue of Decoration in 2007;

Application of Visual Arts in Light Environment Design, China Lighting Engineering Yearbook 2008;

The Creation of Cities’ Night Views, May/June Issue of Lighting Design  in 2009.

There are also speeches and about ten more published papers.

2. Design practices

My design practices include external environment design of the main venue for the 11th Asian Games; general design of Zhejiang Pavilion on 1993 Rouen International Fair (Rouen, France); interior design for the multi-function hall of Bank of China (Singapore City); interior design for the VIP lounge in Terminal 2, Beijing International Airport; landscape and lighting design for Gogol Street and Majiagou Waterside Park in Harbin City; lighting design for the night view of Jinchuan Square in Gansu; urban and lighting design for Qunli New District in Harbin City. I was also the design advisor for landscape lighting of the Olympic Sports Centre, working together with other designers of different research interests.

3. The construction of Lighting & Color Lab

Based on surveys and studies on lighting labs of other universities and research institutions at home and abroad, I explored and designed the lab and its experimental contents for Academy of Arts & Design to meet the requirements of teaching and research of urban planning, architectural design, landscape design, interior design, product design, and lighting majors. I received great supports from Professor ZHAN Qing-xuan and Mr. ZHANG Xin from Tsinghua University School of Architecture, as well as from companies as they provided free equipment. These companies include Guangzhou Hedong Electronics Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Shengya Lamps Co., Ltd., Reggiani Lighting Company (an Italy-based enterprise), Donglin Technology Co., Ltd., to name just a few. At present, the Lab with its uniqueness, innovativeness and advanced technology is used for teaching and research.

Academic Teaching:

Environmental behavioral psychology, light environment design, and graduate design and bachelor dissertation.
