China traditional furniture and modern furniture design research

Academic Viewpoints:

China traditional furniture research is based on geography, cultural anthropology, sociology, residence study and typology, and studies and analyzes Chinese furniture’s forms, styles, and spatial layouts etc. in residential space with the comparative approach.

First, furniture’s spatial design is presented as a medium. Such spatial concept shows the aesthetic tendency and philosophical idea of Chinese traditional furniture. “Integration of nature and man” is the philosophical basis of traditional thoughts. As is said “there is a universal way for heaven, earth and man”, the ancient scholars tend to consider them together, and develop this design concept. Furniture is the medium between man and building, between people and their ancestors, and between man and god, which presents the aesthetic ideal and pursuit of “integration of nature and man”. Second, furniture’s forms fall into certain categorizations The forms of furniture is presented as a connection between the type of the furniture and their functions in life. Different lifestyles produce different furniture and different forms. Third, furniture possesss different layers of elements The elements of furniture are interconnected to form a unified whole. The connectivity and wholeness of these elements is the source of furniture’s diversification and integrity.
