Academic Experience:
Lu Yichen graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University. Later, he worked for China Architecture Design & Research Group and FCJZ. He graduated with a master’s degree in architecture from Yale School of Architecture. He won the first prize of Ikuo Hirayama Scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and the Robert Allen Ward Scholarship Award for Excellent Designs at Yale University. He was also awarded the H.I. Feldman Prize Nominee in Frank O. Gehry Advanced Studio at Yale. In 2006, he was the first prize winner of the International Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition. In 2008, he accepted an invitation by French architect Jean Nouvel to Paris and took part in the “Slussen” Transportation Hub International Competition, Stockholm, Sweden.
He used to work for Asymptote in New York and Morphosis in Los Angeles when he was in the States. Between 2008 and 2010, he worked as a project architect at Gehry Partners, LLP in Los Angeles and was responsible for the design of a series of projects, including Abu Dhabi Guggenheim Museum. From 2010 to 2012, he was a principal architect at Steven Holl Architects, where he was in charge of the firm’s many large-scale projects in China and took part in important international projects. Since 2012, he has been working as an associate professor at Tsinghua University. In 2014, he won the annual Iconic Award of the German Design Council.
In 2013, he served as the Chief Architect for “China Pavilion-Milan Expo 2015” on behalf of Tsinghua University and won the top prize in an international competition. This is China’s first Expo Pavilion outside its territory, and it opened in Milan, Italy in May 2015.
