Research on the decorative pattern of traditional ceramics
China’s ceramic art has rich cultural and spiritual implications, and should be researched and passed down so that they could enrich contemporary ceramic art.
Tradition and modernity can not be discussed separately. We should not ignore the traditional ceramic art, as it is the core subject that we must research. Confucianism thinks that we should study the nature of things to know the way the universe works, which is also the path for our teaching and academic research.
Chinese believe that knowledge makes a man, and it is the way to develop talents. The education of ceramic design is special, as teachers not only teach knowledge and skills, but also shape students’ characters. I think that the core ideology of modern art teaching is to reshape characters, to advocate humanistic ideas, to care about the nature, and to promote creativity.
Zhang is mainly engaged in teaching, researching and creating Chinese traditional ceramic decoration and modern ceramic craft. He has also published a lot of papers, such as The Analysis of Chinese Traditional Ceramics Decorative Pattern, On the Evolution of Chinaware Dermatoglyphic Pattern in Chenhua of Ming Dynasty, Ceramic Craft in Canada, Ceramic Hall in Connor, The Comment on Ceramic Craft in Modern China, and Formal Language of Modern Ceramic Craft, etc. His doctoral dissertation was A Research on Chinese Traditional Ceramic Decoration. He has also published a series of monographs named Walking Up To the Ceramist Zhang Xing, and has published Ceramic Craft--Fifty People and Ceramic Craft. His ceramic craft works have been exhibited in some important exhibitions at home and abroad, such as the 9th and 11th National Art Exhibition, and his works of Quadrel Series have been collected by National Art Museum of China.
