The Department of Industrial Design, founded in 1984, has three majors--Product Design, Exhibit Design, and Vehicle Design. It also includes a multi-level teaching system consisting of four-year bachelor programs, two-year and three-year general master programs, an Industrial Design Engineering Master program and a doctoral program in Industrial Design Research.
As one of the earliest institutions to set up the industrial design major, the department has made a long-term explorations in establishing a teaching system in industrial design. In 1991, the Industrial Design Teaching Plan was awarded the 2nd Prize of Beijing College Outstanding Teaching and Research Achievements, and became an important reference for industrial design education in other colleges. Ever since the year 2000, the Academy started a continuous teaching system reform, the department has established a two-level undergraduate teaching structure, combining cross-disciplinary basic courses and specialized courses.
The department, with around 120 undergraduates and 20 faculty members, has a student-faculty ratio of 6:1, and an average learning area of 4 square meters per student. It ranks number one among all art colleges in China, in terms of both the practice area in the New Academy Building and the average teaching & learning resources per student.
Our graduates have become a strong force in domestic design education, product development, exhibit design, advertisement design and environmental design. The department encourages graduates to work in companies, such as Lenovo, Hisense, BenQ, Huawei, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, LG, etc., as enterprises are the main field for industrial design. Some of our outstanding postgraduates are employed in world’s leading firms like Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot Motors, Japan Mitsubishi Motors, Japan Daihatsu Motors, Singapore Pico Exhibition Corp and Philips Electronics etc.
