Methodology of Interior Design
Relations between Design and Expression
Interior design is part of people’s life, but is also based on architecture. It’s a residence for our body as well as a home for our spirit. Therefore, interior design should develop a series of methods to fit our preferences and to produce the best result under the limitations. As interior design is close to people’s life, its ultimate goal is “suitability”. Therefore, we need to analyze scientifically and rationally, and actively allocate resources to reach such “suitability”. Interior design’s major function and purpose is to balance the contradictions to an optimum state without too big a deviation. My research is about the methods of interior design. Based on the course “Interior Design 1”, I intend to study different methods’ application in interior design, and explore a suitable way.
Interior design include areas such as graphical analysis, sketch analysis, and perspective drawing, and it also requires the skills of rendering production and presentation on multimedia computer etc. Designing expression have 2 main functions. The first is to help designers rationalize their ideas, standardize the designing procedures, and catch their fleeting inspiration. It can help designers reach the integration of mind and hand, and transform their ideas to graphic language in time for further exploration and summarization. The second function is to present the current design through different means of expression, and use proper methods to help the third party understand and accept designers’ concepts and achievements more easily. This is a necessary approach to ensure the designers’ ideas are exchanged and fully communicated.
Traditional environmental artistic teaching usually attaches sole importance to the “presentation” of design, namely the design’s schematization, including the formulation of renderings, plans and graphic model. However, it misses the basic “schematized thinking” in design and the utilization of various avant-garde measures (including multimedia technology) to explain training of designing plans. Therefore, my research based on the course “Designing Expression 3” explores methods and approaches suitable for higher education in these two fields, to provide a more effective and convenient expression form for the teaching and creation of environmental artistic design.
I led the landscape design of multiple key stadiums of the Beijing Olympics, including the Bird’s Nest, the Central Area, MPC, IBC and the Olympic Village etc. I led the landscape design and its implementation of Beijing National Stadium (the Bird’s Nest). I have won many awards including “Excellent Individual in Beijing” granted by Beijing Municipal Government and “Excellence in Work” granted by Ministry of Science of Technology.
